When the desire of recognition clothes itself with humility, it is lethal.
We all receive compliments at one time or another, and often in the church world, it is seen as commonplace to redirect the credit to God. This is not wrong; it is good to acknowledge God for your gifting! Without God, we could not accomplish anything.
The issue comes about when one is using God’s name for praise but internally feels that they deserve that recognition. That is pride and arrogance masked by a humble answer. The ultimate problem with this is that it can become habit! Before you realize it, you may start to believe you are the BEST humble person on the block!
Guard your heart. Don’t allow the desire for recognition to supersede your quest for true humility. This will cause problems in your marriage. If you often believe you deserve recognition for every little thing, you will miss out on the wonderful feeling of humble gratitude.
Micah 6:8 says, “What does God require of you O man, but to do justly, to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God?” This verse is the staple of the series taught by Leo Godzich called “What God Requires.” To learn more about what being humble means, check out that series.
